Wii FIT

By Gruntie on June 04 2008 at 07:57 PM

The Wii has not been able to stay on shelves since it has been released over a year and a half ago. So it’s no surprise that Nintendo is spending many hours in marketing it and finding ways to improve it. Its latest venture? The Wii Fit.

The whole idea around this new concept is to turn gaming and exercising into friends. Games have long been maligned for their violence and most recently health issues. The Wii FIT hopes to change the latter.

First of all I should say (and Nintendo also reiterates this point), the Wii FIT is not to replace your doctor or physical instructor’s program. Instead it’s designed to compliment it or be an alternative to just sitting down and playing without any physical workout. While it does not have a straight forward exercise plans (and customization is not allowed) it does provide a fun way to interact with games instead of just sitting in the couch and pressing buttons on a controller.

The basis of the Wii FIT system is a balance board that has seven internal scales that are used for the functions of the system. The board communicates wirelessly with the Wii system and requires 4 AA batteries to operate. Unfortunately the maximum supported weight is only 330lbs so that means those on the chunky side had better use other means to lose those excess pounds before auditioning for a Wii FIT.

What To Expect From The iPod In The Next 5 Years

By Gruntie on May 20 2008 at 02:44 PM

Ever since the original iPod’s release all those years ago in 2001, internet forums and blogs have constantly been trading rumors of what the next Apple iPod will bring, what new features it will have. While Apple has so far done an excellent job at giving its customers what it wants there are still many flaws to the iPod that prevent it from being the ultimate multimedia device. While Apple has a strict policy on divulging any information regarding upcoming devices, Steve Jobs hinted a while ago at what the future iPod may be.

An inter faceless device without any controls or ports. The recent iPod Touch and iPhone certainly confirm the direction in which the iPod is heading with its multi-way touch screen and very limited number of controls. This would allow to expand the iPod’s screen to a massive 4”. As for the lack of ports it’s easy to envision that the future iPod will rely solely on bluetooth or or wi-fi for song transfers and syncing other files and documents.

While the flagship iPod will remain the iPod Touch in the coming years, several other iPods are rumored to receive major upgrades;

iPod Shuffle - It is almost physically impossible to make an mp3 player smaller than the 2nd generation iPod Shuffle. Let’s not forget that impossible is not a word a man like Steve Jobs likes to hear. In the coming years the iPod Shuffle will be worn directly in ear with a wireless remote to control basic operations such as ‘previous/next’ and volume control.

iPod Nano - The iPod Nano will not undergo any drastic change aside from the addition of a touchscreen like that of the iPod Touch but will retain it’s basic functionalities.

iPod - The iPod Classic as the latest version of the original mode is called will be childbearing from the iPod family in favor of the iPod Touch.

How To Use Your iPod Touch as an iPhone

By Gruntie on May 06 2008 at 10:39 PM

Virtually indistinguishable at first glance the iPhone and the iPod Touch have but one major difference: the iPhone allows you to make calls. Of course that added bonus comes with a $60 monthly fee and 2 year contract with AT&T. Many of you have probably guessed where this is headed; the iPod Touch’s wi-fi feature to make VoIP calls. nfortunately Apple was one step ahead of the average thinking public and nixed the microphone feature as well. For every great corporate money making scheme there’s an even greater philanthropist mind to bring justice to the masses.

In comes the Touchmod Mic, a simple dongle which attaches to the dock connector port and allows you to plug in a regular 3.5mm headset for use with a regular handsfree headset. Let’s look at the specifics.

Here’s what you’ll need to get started.

iPod Touch - Surely you must already have one otherwise this article is of very little interest to you.

ZiPhone - A free application which allows you to Jailbreak your iPod Touch. You can download ZiPhone for free at http://www.ziphone.org

TouchMod Microphone - The device costs between $48 and $59 depending on which version you order. You have the choice between the dong connector or the headset. The headset connection will allow you to use the call/hangup and volume features. Order at http://home.swipnet.se/ridax/touchmic.htm

LG Vu

By Gruntie on April 16 2008 at 03:53 PM

The LG Vu is another one of those iPhone lookalikes. But it has one major advantage over the iPhone. It supports Mobile TV (from AT&T since that is its only carrier now) and the TV feature is no joke.

DESIGN:

As I said before the design is iPhoneesque. The phone features only 3 hard keys. Everything else is controlled via a touch sensitive screen that mimics the iPhone in many ways. While the phone does have an iPhone feel those familiar with LG’s Prada, Venus etc will see more design cues from there rather than the iphone.

The phone features a huge 3 inch display (a little less than the iPhone) that supports 262,000 colors and 240x400 pixels. Of course this means that you are getting an amazingly bright screen that pays attention to the finest detail.

Other design features to take note of is the finish. The phone features a high gloss finish. While this makes the device look expensive ($299 after $100 mail in rebate) it also does a god job of attracting fingerprints and smudges (something the iPhone and PSP are also good at). It also features a pull out antenna that is a key feature to the excellent video quality the phone posses (which unfortunately are lacking on the iPhone).

Blackberry Bold

By Gruntie on April 08 2008 at 11:49 AM

No the blackberry bold is not an iPhone killer. That title goes to the new Thunder model that will be available in the third quarter of 2008. The Blackberry Bold is the latest in the company’s line of super smart phones that have won the hearts of business executives and consumers alike.

BOLD DESIGN!<br/>
The name fits the phone perfectly. The new Bold looks like a cross between the Blackberry Curve and the Motorola Q9c. The device is much more streamlined than previous models from the company and the new interface lends a hand of approval to the new design. The phone still sticks the QWERTY keyboard we have gotten used to and four soft keys along with the Blackberry button.

One of the best features to the external design of the new Blackberry is the leather back. The leather back will also be replaceable with different back plates of assorted colors including gray, blue and red. The phone is pretty lightweight also weighing around 4.7 ounces with dimensions of 4.5x2.6 inches.

Tips And Tricks To Fix A Broken iPod

By Gruntie on March 25 2008 at 08:34 AM

Before you throw out that old iPod and shell out $300 to buy a new one, you may want to try these simple tips and tricks to see if you can breath some new life into your old musical companion.

The first step in determining whether you can fix your broken iPod is to determine whether to cause of the problem is software based or hardware based.

The most common hardware problem is due to the iPod’s hard drive failing. Over time the hard drive connectors within the case can become loose and cause your iPod to malfunction. The common symptoms are are repeated clicking sounds and a high pitched whirring sound. Unfortunately if your iPod has these common symptoms there is very little you can do by yourself. Fixing a hard drive issue will require special tools and parts and an understanding of how the iPod main board works. Therefore it is better to leave that task up to an Apple licensed technician. The average cost of repairing an iPod hard drive is under $100 including the parts and labor.

Another regular iPod hardware failure is water damage. If an iPod has come into contact with water, whether it was exposed to rain or it was left in a steamy bathroom, it is generally beyond repair. If the incident just occurred the first thing to do is to place it in a warm area on a dry surface such as a cloth or another absorbent material. Leave the iPod for 24 hours without trying to turn it on. If the iPod still does not turn on after this period it is very likely that it is beyond repair. Unfortunately the Apple Care Plan does not cover water damage either.

Convert Videos To iPod For Free

By Gruntie on March 14 2008 at 12:05 PM

The iPod 5th generation originally released in 2005 brought the added functionality of watching videos. Of course the 2.5” screen with a 320x240 pixel resolution did not make the experience a very thrilling one and often left us squinting at the tiny screen. Nonetheless it was an overwhelming success and Apple capitalized on the idea by releasing the iPod Touch. With it’s massive 3.5” screen and a 320x480 pixels resolution it became the standard in portable multimedia devices.

There was still one problem; how do I get videos on to my iPod? A question that many software companies were glad to answer with their $50-$60 software solution. As always though the freeware scene was just one step behind with the free alternatives. In this guide we will show you how to convert any video for playback on your iPod without having to spend a dime.

The best all-around all-in-one video to iPod converter is Videora iPod Converter. Videora allows you to convert virtually all types of videos: avi, divx, xvid, flv, x264, vob, mpeg, DVD, YouTube for use on the iPod. You can download it for free at http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPhone/

The process is very simple:

1. Download and install the program

2. Load up Videora and click on the settings tab at the top

3. Click on devices and choose iPod or iPhone

4. Click on the convert tab and choose your video

* Select the appropriate settings for your video.

5. Click start converting

* For a DVD the Quality should be set to High, anything else leave it on Medium. Always leave the “Enhance Quality” function Off, it will simply lengthen the process and the difference will not be noticeable. Audio quality should always be set to High to avoid any hissing noise.

4 Ways To Connect Your iPod In The Car

By Gruntie on March 05 2008 at 02:25 PM

Using your iPod in the car can make an hour in traffic fly by and can also make long road trips more enjoyable. Regardless of the reason you wish you to have an iPod in the car there are several techniques of achieving this task. Before you spend any money on one of the installations verify that your vehicle is not already equipped with the functionality. Most car manufacturers include this as a standard feature. To verify take a look at your car’s stereo deck and see if you can’t find an input labeled “aux” which is short for auxiliary. If you have this input you simply need to purchase an auxiliary cable to run from your iPod’s headset connector to the car’s stereo and switch to the aux channel. If you do not have this input there are several alternatives starting from as little as $20.

If your car has cassette deck you have the option of purchasing a cassette adapter. This device is a cassette with a cable attached to connect to the iPod’s headphone jack. While the sound quality is not crystal clear and will have some hissing feedback it is clear enough to enjoy your music in the car.

Alternatively you can also purchase an iPod FM transmitter. This is a small dongle which again connect to the headphone jack and broadcasts the music to any available FM radio station. This solution works very well in more rural areas where there is a limited number of broadcasting frequencies but the quality will diminish drastically in more urban areas. The iPod FM transmitter is the perfect solution for a road trip.

Picking the Right Domain Name

By Gruntie on February 20 2008 at 02:20 PM

Domain names are no longer a web address these days. Many profitable companies have been built around their domain name making it the brand and the company. Choosing the right domain should be as important as naming your product. Given that status, here are some pointers how to find a name that will see you through it all.

Branding vs. Keywords

This is probably the most difficult to determine. Yet, should be the first place to start because the rest of the considerations will one way or another relate to this. There are two schools of thought. One group believes you should have your keywords in the domain so that search engines pick up on the keywords and rank you better. To what extent this really affects your search engine ranking is not clearly known or proven. Consider why you are putting the website up in the first place. Most likely it’s for your customers or visitors. So choose a domain that also puts your audience first.

The other group believes a webmaster should go for brand. Most successful companies start off with a brand, including online companies. Brands make the product memorable, create differentiation and encourage loyalty. In the early days of the Internet, everyone wanted a generic domain like searchengine.com, books.com, auctions.com and the likes. Today, very few of those are truly successful sites that rival Google, Amazon and eBay.

A branded domain also ensures consistency throughout your marketing efforts. As one web user describes, “Every time the company tells me to visit their generic website, they lose the opportunity to reinforce their brand name in my mind”.

Whether you use keywords or brand for your domain depends much on what you aim to do. If you plan to build a business or website that is going to have staying power, branded domains are a better choice. It might not be easy or cheap to build a brand but there are no shortcuts when it comes to branding either. It’s a slow process that can be very rewarding if done right. Don’t choose a domain simply because of its keywords. First class content, links in and clever optimization are more important to good ranking than anything else. Having said that, a brand name made up of keywords could be best, and you would have the best of both worlds – literally. Take CancerComforts.com. Owner Kathy Browning chose the domain because of its keywords. But apart from being keyword rich, CancerComforts.com is also very marketable and can be a strong brand.

If you are building a resource website, a website for affiliate programs or one that’s temporary in nature, keyword rich and generic domains would be a better choice. Finally, there is no harm in buying both branded and keyword domains that point to the same site. Just make sure you only use one for submissions, directory listings, link exchanges and promotion. This way you build your link popularity.

You should also, make sure the site title or name matches your domain. If your domain is ExtremeBiking.com and your site name is Smith Brothers Biking Tours this makes visitors and directory editors wonder if this is the correct website. It also causes confusion. People who know you tend to look for a domain that reflects your brand and not extreme biking. If you have yet to establish a company name or a site name, it might be a good idea to name it after you find a domain name. This is sensible, consistent marketing.

Company Name

This is the most common because in today’s increasingly small and competitive world, businesses tend to have rather creative and catchy names. On the other hand, if your business name is very nondescript such as The Smith Brothers, you might want to take the approach that combines part of your company name and a keyword. Although the importance of brand name was emphasized earlier, here the situation is slightly different. Non-descriptive company names aren’t particularly helpful to audiences. Someone looking for you would find it difficult to differentiate your company and the other company with a similar name. In this case, keywords tied to your name are worth considering.

Domain Length

Short domains are supposed to be best but it’s increasingly difficult to find one without paying someone a lot of money to take over the domain. There are alternatives though, such as expired domains which we will explore a little later on.

Just because a domain is a little longer doesn’t make it bad. For example, TrashToTreasure.com is meaningful, to the point and memorable even though it is rather long. On the other hand, ThisIsAnExampleOfAVeryLongDomain.com is too long, difficult to remember and prone to errors. The other extreme is needless abbreviation. TTT.com is meaningless because TrashToTreasure.com works much butter. Aim for some balance while taking into account ease of use.

.Com, .Net, .Info

Most people will agree a .com is best. A web user told us, “Whenever I can’t remember the domain name but I know the site name, brand or company, I’ll try for a .com first”. If you have no good .com alternative, start with .net and .org first. Also, be sure to consistently promote your website as a .net or .org whatever you may choose.

Hyphens, Suffixes and Prefixes

Hyphens aren’t necessarily evil especially if it’s in your brand name or is the correct way to write a word. However, they are difficult to remember, type and prone to user input mistakes. Avoid them as much as you can.

Suffixes and prefixes are i’s, e’s, the’s and numbers usually suggested by domain search tools when your desired domain is unavailable. If you choose such a domain, be very consistent in your promotion. Promote the domain as a whole, do not leave out the suffix or prefix. You might also want to avoid domains with very little difference between them. These are usually between plurals and singulars. Aim for singular names whenever possible. For example, petfood.com and petfoods.com; If petfood.com is taken, resist the temptation to opt for petfoods.com because people tend to leave out the ‘s’.

Can You Say It?

This isn’t always a top consideration but it makes sense you should have a domain name that can be verbally communicated. Take your list of chosen domains and tell it to someone. Does it confuse them? Do you find yourself having to constantly repeat it or spell it? If that is so, move on or go back to the drawing board.
