What To Expect From The iPod In The Next 5 Years
Ever since the original iPod’s release all those years ago in 2001, internet forums and blogs have constantly been trading rumors of what the next Apple iPod will bring, what new features it will have. While Apple has so far done an excellent job at giving its customers what it wants there are still many flaws to the iPod that prevent it from being the ultimate multimedia device. While Apple has a strict policy on divulging any information regarding upcoming devices, Steve Jobs hinted a while ago at what the future iPod may be.
An inter faceless device without any controls or ports. The recent iPod Touch and iPhone certainly confirm the direction in which the iPod is heading with its multi-way touch screen and very limited number of controls. This would allow to expand the iPod’s screen to a massive 4”. As for the lack of ports it’s easy to envision that the future iPod will rely solely on bluetooth or or wi-fi for song transfers and syncing other files and documents.
While the flagship iPod will remain the iPod Touch in the coming years, several other iPods are rumored to receive major upgrades;
iPod Shuffle - It is almost physically impossible to make an mp3 player smaller than the 2nd generation iPod Shuffle. Let’s not forget that impossible is not a word a man like Steve Jobs likes to hear. In the coming years the iPod Shuffle will be worn directly in ear with a wireless remote to control basic operations such as ‘previous/next’ and volume control.
iPod Nano - The iPod Nano will not undergo any drastic change aside from the addition of a touchscreen like that of the iPod Touch but will retain it’s basic functionalities.
iPod - The iPod Classic as the latest version of the original mode is called will be childbearing from the iPod family in favor of the iPod Touch.
iPod Touch - The iPod touch will become inter faceless with a 4” touch screen. The iPod Touch will also receive a hard drive upgrade to allow users to fit more movies and tv shows as iTunes offers more on demand content. The upgraded iPod Touch will also feature a 5MP camera.
Unnamed Business iPod - A device similar to the iPhone although more business oriented. Apple has made it clear it intends to compete with Blackberry for the business clientèle therefore we can expect such a device in the coming years. With office applications such as word document, PDF reader, spreadsheet applications. Apple will also make use of the camera to promote video conferencing, and the iPod’s MP3 player to listen to corporate communiques as podcasts.
Of course Apple always has a trick up its sleeve and a way to keep its users second guessing until the official release day.
